I want to thank John Maclean for recommending this book to me. I would hope that a fire historian of the stature of Maclean or Pyne would undertake a detailed study of American Indian firefighters in the near future.

ShoRap Highway The Native American Firefighters of Wind River Robin Whiteplume Kelly Andersson Roy Montgomery 9780692889121 Books Reviews

This is an amazing story of Native-American firefighters from the point of view of the author who served as a firefighter himself. It gives a unique and vivid perspective on such a fascinating subject, and I felt a deeper connection to the writing because of this, none moreso than in the parts he makes reflections of his own experiences.

Whiteplume’s writing is good, certainly engaging and capable enough that I was drawn in right from the start and even felt captivated at times as I progressed through the book. When finishing I felt I still wanted more, and then reading he is writing another book covering the history of all Native American fire crews has me eagerly awaiting its release.
This is an important book about the hugely important, though often forgotten Native American men and women who fight wildfires. Whiteplume, a member of the Northern Arapaho tribe, gives you the history and his personal perspective as someone who fought fires for many years in the crews of the Wind River reservation in Wyoming. I highly recommend this book to anyone who wants to learn more about firefighting and the valuable contributions of Native Americans.
Robin Whiteplume has done a masterful job in this long-awaited story of the Shoshone and Arapaho wildfire fighters of the Wind River Reservation in west-central Wyoming. He blends details of the art of wildfirefighting with a history of the formation of the famed Sho-Rap firefighting crews, their heyday in the latter part of the twentieth century, and the eventual decline in participation among the recent generation of Shoshone and Arapaho youth. Adding to the enjoyable aspects of the book are personal reminiscences of Whiteplume's own experiences as a member of this storied group. A most informative, entertaining, readable, and long-overdue book that was well-worth the wait.
Sho-Rap Highway is far more than the story of one Native American firefighter crew from Wyoming.
It's a long-overdue history of the role of Native Americans in fighting wildland fires across the nation, told factually and anecdotally by Robin Whiteplume, a longtime firefighter who served with the Sho-Rap fire crews. Native American firefighters not only bring muscle and know-how to the fire ground, they also bring a spiritual connection to both fire and the land – from which the fire community can learn and draw strength. This is based on generations of experience by Native American firefighters that Whiteplume details in this worthy addition to the literature of wildland fire. Fair play disclosure I know the author and have read the book in galleys. I stand by everything I said above, and here's my name on it.
