Leaving her tiny English village for the bright lights of London, Odeline Milk is finally going to make her dream a reality to establish herself as a mime artist. She certainly wears the clothes for it white collarless shirt, waistcoat, baggy black trousers, walking stick and bow tie have long been her uniform. She's an unusual young woman.
With the inheritance left by her mother, Odeline buys her own little patch of London an old houseboat on the canal. What she doesn't know yet is that for some the city's canals have an appeal of their own. They are below the eyeline, a sort of halfworld, a good place to hide for a community of curious outsiders, all with their own stories to tell - stories that might help a certain young lady to think differently about life.
As Odeline becomes enmeshed in her new community, her naivety starts to ebb away; the first thing she learns is that she doesn't know much about life at all.
Mave Fellowes has an MA in Creative and Life Writing. Many days spent watching the water finally inspired her to write her first book, Chaplin and Company, set on and around the London waterways. Prior to this, she had several pieces of work published in Granta and various other publications.

Not profound or life changing, but a wonderfully creative enjoyable story. You will wish it gets made into a movie so you can inhabit the world of the quirky people even more visually. Characters are consistent but grow through interaction with each other. The writing is very good and the narrative form deftly weaves in the backstory of each major character. The setting is so vivid it influenced me to web search houseboat living in London and watching youtube videos of those who do it. It made the reading more vivid and had me momentarily fantasizing about doing moving there myself.Product details

Refreshing book that takes the reader from the depths to the lesser peaks of life. I really liked the book, especially as I was finishing it. The book flows on an upward motion, never reaching a pinnacle but rather a relaxing high.
The book is very slow moving. There is too much description OF the characters and too little FROM the characters. The author asked the characters to become less dry 2/3 way into the book. I enjoyed the last third but an sorry I purchased the book.
At first, I had a hard time figuring out what was going on. But, I liked the writing style and decided to stay with it. This book is like one of those artsy movies. You just have to relax and enjoy it. In fact, I kept thinking it would make a great movie, and I started envisioning my favorite movie stars playing the different roles. If you're looking for a straight forward script, with uncomplicated characters....this isn't for you. But, if you're open to jumping around a little and having a plot all take shape near the end of the book....then I highly recommend Chaplin & Company.
Wow, what a great book....felt like I was there and made me want to be a part of Odeline's "journey"!!! Wish they had canal boats in the USA!

I am not one to gush over books. I read a lot, and I am generally quite critical about what I read. But I am going to 'gush' a bit about Mave Fellowes' 'Chaplin & Company'.
I love books, not only for the stories that they tell, but also for the way in which the story is told. This first novel is an absolute winner on both of these counts. I couldn't help but be reminded of John Irving (one of my favorites) while reading 'Chaplin & Company'. What I have always appreciated about Irving is the literary excellence with which he tells quirky tales - and Mave Fellowes' book gave me that same sense of a quirky story told exceptionally well.
It is difficult for me to believe that 'Chaplin & Company' is a first novel. I too am a writer, and I would be proud to claim a book of this quality, not only as a first novel, but as my finest achievement. I can only say that I will be watching for more from Mave Fellowes.
I loved this book about an adventurous little wallflower. I felt like I was in the marina with the characters. I loved that she was so smart and careful and strong, but at the same time, so young and innocent, and hopeful.
