Reminiscences of My Life in Camp with the 33D United States Colored Troops Late 1St S C Volunteers Susie King Taylor Books Reviews

Susie King Taylor, a young black Savannah resident at the time of the Civil War, wrote her reminiscences of her life in camp with the 33rd U.S. Colored Troops, well after the fact. The book was first published in 1902 in Boston by the author.

She was remarkable. She could read and write with remarkable facility at age 17 and so was in great demand as an informal adjunct to the colored troops she served with. She signed on as a laundress, but performed whatever task was asked of her. She became a great favorite of the men and their officers.

Exhilarated by President Lincoln’s Emancipation Proclamation, she assumed that, finally, she was entitled to the rights that were accorded white citizens. Not for long. She felt the heavy hand of Jim Crow on her shoulder as her hopes for freedom were shattered as the Reconstruction period lapsed into the long dark period of the suppression of Negro rights.

She found her way north to Boston and Massachusetts where blacks were more welcome, more likely to be accorded at least some of the privileges of citizenship. It was in Boston where she wrote and published her memoir. The current edition published in 1987 with an introuction by Willie Lee Rose of Johns Hopkins University also comes with footnotes placing Taylor’s activities in their historical context thanks to the editing of another Johns Hopkins faculty member, Patricia W. Romero.

End note. Said to be the first such account by a woman of color, the book is remarkable for the ability of the author to render her experiences without rancor. But it is as clear as could be that Emancipation changed very little for southern blacks. The Jim Crow south was as vicious to its black residents as slavery had been. What hurts most is the realization that discrimination against our black citizens continues virtually unabated in many areas of the country where the notion that Black Lives Matter is still anathema to far too many of us.
This was an outstanding book about life with the Colored Troops in the Union Army.
I have also sent this book to my daughter in Texas.
